I visited the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Gulf State Park Fishing Pier on Sept 19th, 2010 as well as two freshwater marshes in the area. The national wildlife refuge smelled heavily of crude oil, had oily mousse washing ashore and not much birdlife. The birds that were there were laying about the beach at times and seemed to lack the usual energy shown by these birds. They were foraging for food in the oily mousse as it washed ashore. Gulf State Park was oily smell, clean sand with few tar balls. Birds were abundant.
